French or Foe?
A
very useful book in helping the reader understand the essence of being
French...It gives enough historical background, developments of ideas
so that the idiosynchracies of the French life and work style are seen
connected in a wider context...There is a fine balance between culture
-- its origin and manifestation -- and descriptions of daily events and
stories...A
book that is a must for business people doing business with the French
or wanting to understand the behavior of French citizens here in the US.
BASIL ROUSKAS, President, Basil Rouskas Associates,

Read the complete review.
French
or Foe? is an extraordinarily useful, amusing and stunningly insightful
analysis of all aspects of France-Anglo-Saxon communication... I envy you
reading it for the first time.
H.E. WALTER J. P. CURLEY, U.S.Ambassador to France,1989-1993
It's
brilliant! I laughed until I cried. It should be required reading for
anyone coming to live in France.. even for someone like me who has been
here 40-odd years. I learned a lot.
SUSAN TRAIN, bureau chief, Conde Nast Publications,
Paris
It's insightful, funny and true. Polly understands
'us' and 'them' better than anyone.
WALTER WELLS, Managing Editor, The International
Herald Tribune
Absolutely
remarkable, very well observed, brilliant and very, very funny.
BARON ELIE DE ROTHSCHILD
French
or Foe? should be required reading for all foreign service officers
coming to France.
RON MORTENSON, Head of Personnel, U.S. Embassy,
Paris
I've
traveled extensively in France for over 25 years... and I genuinely appreciate
your thorough and interesting analysis of these marvelously complex people
and what makes them behave the way they do.
ROGER F. JONES, CEO, Franklin Polymers, Broomall,

This
is a wonderful book for anyone interested in France and the French. I have
been recommending it as a must to all my student-newcomers.
DR. MANFRED KETS DE VRIES, professor of management
and leadership at INSEAD, Fontainebleau
Very
perceptive, highly entertaining. A fun-to-read, excellent work. My wife
-- an American -- also read it and exclaimed, "So you're not crazy,
André -- you're just French!"
ANDRE MALECOT, author, Santa Barbara, CA
Wonderfully funny, accurate, informative and helpful.
MARY EVANS, Director of Training, World Bank
I am particularly pleased by the way in which you used my ideas in French
or Foe? It has been my primary aim throughout my life to make sense
out of, among other things cultural differences in time, space and perception.
You seem to understand all of this and have the same desire as I... to show
people what's really going on.
EDWARD T. HALL, cultural anthropologist, author
As a sociologist active in the cross-cultural field (and as a person who
has lived on four continents) I still did not catch many of the elements
French or Foe? caught in French society and culture. To put
it more positively, I certainly learned a lot from the book.
PROFESSOR WALTER SCHWAGER, Université Canadienne
en France, Villefranche-sur-Mer
Une surprise! French or Foe? is such a good, useful, entertaining
(and loving) look at the Gallic personality, it's attracting readers one
might not expect. That's what I discovered on a recent business trip to
Paris when it slipped out of my briefcase and onto the conference table.
Naturellement, they had all read and enjoyed Ms. Platt's insights
long before I had. Beware. Be armed. Get it if you want to be more comfortable
and better accepted by nos amis français.
LIVINGSTON MILLER, World Wide Web (Internet)
I read French or Foe? with great interest. I even learned
a lot about my own French culture... an outstanding piece of work.
GEORGES HOSTACHE, OSTA Consulting, Houston, TX
It is the best compendium I've ever seen on the differences and similarities
between French and American cultures, with dozens of on-the-mark anecdotes.
RONALD HOLDEN, head of France in your Glass
The book is wonderful. As a Francophile myself, and an anthropologist who
specializes in French culture, I found the insights, examples and advice
both accurate and worthwhile.
JULIA GLUESING, President, Cultural Connections, Troy
Minnesota
I have been living in the Orient for 20 years, and I find French or
Foe? one of the most helpful books ever written about modern French
society.
MARQUIS DE LA MOUSSAYE, Saigon, Vietnam
The
book has brought me tears of joy, happiness, nostalgia, and laughter. It
reflects all my own experiences. I got so absorbed in it that I forgot my
responsibilities.
VERONICA DE COURCY, Gerona, Spain
I have been going to France for 30 years (six of which I was married to
a French woman) and considered myself fluent in the manners and mores of
French society. I guess ignorance is bliss because French or Foe?
opened my eyes to so many things I was never aware of.
